NCWD in collaboration with UN Women and Intel Organise training for Women on ICT and Entrepreneurship Training

NCWD in collaboration with UN Women and Intel Organise training for Women on ICT and Entrepreneurship Training

By Raji Hussein Olaniyi, Abuja Sept. 16, 2015 (NAN)

The National Centre for Women Development (NCWD) in collaboration with UN Women and Intel Corporation had on Friday organised a training session on ICT and entrepreneurship for women empowerment.

The programme tagged “training the trainers” which attracted women from different organisations across the country was organised to empower women in the area of technology and Entrepreneurship.

Lady Onyeka Onwenu, Director General National Centre for Women Development (NCWD) said that the training is about skills and empowering the woman to make her more economically independent.

She said as women are considered to be the pillar of the house hence the need to empower them.

She said, in a world of huge opportunities where the fast moving ICT is the backbone of every business women should not be left behind.

“in this programme, we have trainers who are here to be trained in technology and entrepreneurship skills, in order to further train other women when they get back to their base”, she said.

Onwenu said that the objective of the programme is to increase the utilisation of digital services and e-services and also to advance women’s economic empowerment.

She further said that the programme is to enhance the digital literacy and the use of ICTs among women and girls to promote their business.

She however said that the programme that started on Monday, Sept. 14 2015 will take the participants through different topics.

“During the one week programme, participants will be taken through different topics including: the role of ICT in business, internet usage for business, social media for business web design and hosting and online marketing”.

Onwenu pointed out that accommodation, meals and tuitions are fully paid for by sponsors and not only that, all the participants will go home with a sum of 20 000 naira each.

In addition, Onwenu said that the participants were invited from organisations across Nigeria who are interested in training other women on using technology and other social media platforms in order to improve their businesses.

She however appreciated those who partner with NCWD, the UN Women, Intel Corporation and all other organisations involved in the training for their contributions towards the programme.

In her remarks, Dr. Grace Ongile, UN Women Representative to Nigeria and Ecowas gives kudos to Intel Corporation for conceiving and funding such a great idea which aimed at bridging the gap between men and women in the technological area.

She further said that the theme of the workshop Technology and Entrepreneurship for women in Nigeria are appropriate consi8dering their objectives for the programme.

Ongile said that the UN Women is currently collaborating with Intel Corporation in three countries in Africa and they are Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa.

Furthermore, the collaboration deals with increasing the utilisation of digital services and e-services to advance women’s economic empowerment.

In addition, the collaboration was to enhance literacy and use of ICTs among young women and girls and informing efforts to engender national policies on ICT, Ongile said.

She however pointed out that the objectives are based on the current gender gap.

Based on the data published by the International Telecommunications (ITU), as at 2013, the number of women internet users was estimated at 1.3 billion accounting for 37 percents of women worldwide, she said.

Dr. Ongile also said that the UN Women has entered a strategic partnership with Intel Corporation on a programme tagged “Intel, She will Connect” which seeks to reduce the digital gender gap through a combination of digital literacy training.

Moreover, the UN Women looks to seeing young women whose capacities have been built to access ICTs and to avail themselves with opportunities available within the public and private sectors in Nigeria.

The permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development represented by John Olusoji, Acting Director in the Ministry said that the project will serve as a means for more women and girls to be equipped with computer knowledge.

He further said that ICT provides the main tool to reduce discrimination and to empower women for all types of activities, since information and capacity to communicate and to be involved in decision-making are the basic pillars of empowerment.

Oyemomi said that the effort by the UN Women in collaborating with the NCWD to promote women and girls’ access to ICT and internet provides a useful framework mainstreaming gender into the process of building and inclusive society and knowledge based economy.

He however said that the Federal Government through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has over the years supported a lot of women to be trained in ICT by NCWD.

ASUU Strike Update: NANS gives FG, ASUU Ultimatum

ASUU Strike Update: NANS gives FG, ASUU Ultimatum.

THE National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has given the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU,  December 31 deadline to resolve their differences and call off the ongoing strike, vowing that it would mobilize members to disrupt the 2019 general elections if both sides remained adamant after expiration of the deadline.

The body also vowed that unlike in previous elections were politicians used its members for elections for their ulterior motives, the forthcoming elections will see a different students who are not ready to be used anymore.

Addressing the media in Abuja, NANS Zone A Coordinator, Umar Faruk Lawal, regretted that after several meetings, both government and ASUU were yet to reach agreement with a view to calling off the ongoing strike.

To this end,he warned:” Today, we want to announce to the federal government, the ASUU and to the whole world that very soon,we are coming out in full force. It’s not a threat to the government neither is it a threat to ASUU, we are not afraid of anybody that wants to jeopardize the future of the Nigerian students or the Nigerian masses. We are coming out and we are going to hold the entire nation stagnant. By that time, we will shut down airports and major roads across Nigeria

“We are warning the federal government and not appealing to them because it’s our right. Most of our leaders, from the president to the permanent secretaries went to school free of charge but some of us go to do bricklayer work to come and pay our school fees while some hang around in campuses to do one or two printing work to pay their fees.

“The greatest surprise to us is that some people are celebrating that the federal government is doing well in education,it is not doing well at all. “I want this message to reach the table of the president that 2019 is around the corner. All the PVCs of the Nigerian students are not meant for the government that is not taking good care of our educational sector. “If they don’t call off this strike before the end of December 31,2018,we as NANS are going to resolve it for them,”he said.

MYSTERY: History Repeats, Same Month & Date as Fire Guts Keffi Main Market

It was again a night of horror as traders and residents around the keffi main market helplessly watched their goods get burnt by yet another midnight fire outbreak at the market.

It was gathered that the fire which started at about 2am on friday morning, lasted for more than 9 hours, and burnt furiously and out of control affecting the highly stocked Provision Line where goods worth hundreds of millions were burnt.. The source of the fire is still a mystery.

According to an eye witness, "goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed, and there have been recurrence of this incidence and its always towards the end of the year".

This fire incident is almost an annual occurrence in Keffi town. People usually attributed the fire to spiritual factors, that some traders get richer when their shops are burnt.

Another eye witness disclosed a very mysterious fact to this occurrence "We experienced this 5 years ago (21/12/2013) ..Oh my God history has repeat itself again (21/12/2018)".

The Keffi main market is located in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, which is about 46 kilometers away from Abuja, the federal capital city.

ASUU & FG Meeting Ends In Deadlock As Strike Continues

A meeting between the Nigerian government and university lecturers has ended Thursday evening without resolution of the nationwide strike by the teachers.

The teachers said the strike which began on November 4 would continue.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) called the strike over its demands for improved funding of universities and welfare of lecturers.

Thursday’s meeting began 3p.m and ended 8:15 p.m.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said government’s discussion with ASUU will continue next week .
Mr Ngige earlier said the meeting with the university teachers was late in coming due to the minimum wage negotiation.

He appealed to ASUU to put the interests of student as who are at the receiving end into consideration.

ASUU president, Biodun Ogunyemi, said the union have tendered its request and also said the meeting has been adjourned till next week.

According to him, no date has been fixed but “we will communicate the date to you tomorrow,” he told waiting journalists.

He said the union was forced to call the strike after its plea for the implementation of the 2009 agreement fell on deaf ears.

“Our meeting with the education minister in May and September to remind him about federal government promises to implement the agreement yielded no result,” he said.

Mr Ogunyemi earlier said the government had promised to take action on issues raised in the last MOU signed by the two parties but “it does appears that federal government is dribbling the union.”

ASUU Strike: Lecturers to hold crucial meeting with govt Thursday

ASUU Strike: Lecturers to hold crucial meeting with govt Thursday

After over one week public university lecturers commenced strike, the government has finally called them for a meeting
tomorrow (Thursday).

Confirming this development, the president of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, said the lecturers are not optimistic about the outcome of the meeting which he said ”will determine the seriousness of the Nigerian government towards ending the strike.”

“The government has invited us for a meeting tomorrow, we are not sure of their seriousness because we have been discussing with them for 16 months without any result,” he said.

On the readiness of the lecturers to call off the strike if tomorrow’s meeting swings in their favour, he said
“after the meeting, we will tell members the outcome. They are the only ones who can decide to call off the strike.”

The official also said he is not concerned about the formation of a parallel union by some aggrieved lecturers, ”who have kept on teaching regardless of the strike order.

Some lecturers at the Obafemi Awolowo University under a rival union, Congress of Nigerian Universities Academics have been teaching despite the strike.

“ASUU is the only recognised lecturers’ body, some persons are free to show they are annoyed but truthfully, the strike is on and all lecturers have respected it,” the official said.

He also denied rumours that the lecturers have accepted government’s proposal to set up an education bank, which was one of the reasons they went on strike in the first place.

“We have not accepted education banking. We were surprised on reports that we accepted it. It is a means to exploit students and make them pay tuition fee.

“Some students do not get jobs even five years after graduation and they will be asked to repay a million naira. That is selling them to slavery totally,” he said.

Other demands of ASUU include improved funding of education and improved teaching and learning conditions in the universities.

Is There Really S.U.G In Nasarawa State University?

10th November, 2018

As a journalist my first obligation is to upholding the truth and reporting issues factually, concisely and precisely without any form of interference and bias.

It is rather heartbreaking to note that after several months of Student Union Government's (S.U.G) resuscitation in Nasarawa State University all seems to be the same, infact students can hardly tell if S.U.G exists in NSUK or not.

Today, there are little or no physical or educational empowerment the Student's Union Government can lay claims to despite several months of been in power.

There are also no tangible structural achievement students of the varsity can point at, as a project started and completed by this administration despite monies alleged disbursed by the university management to the union.

Then I wonder why we didn't borrow a cue from other universities where SUG had visible projects such as Bus Shuttle, Bus Stop, Inter University Debate Competition,  Donation of Water Facilities, Inter Faculty Debate Competition, Adequate Water Supply etc.

Shockingly!! In recent time there have been accusations and counter accusations of gross embezzlement leveled against the Executive President by high ranking members of the Executive and Senate; alleging that the President had squandered association's fund running into several millions of naira and even received several sums without the consent of members of the Executive and Senate.

It was further revealed that the winners of NSUK pageantry were never given a price, as they were offered blank cheques.

While the President on his own part seems to be accusing a section of his Executive and Senate of trying to sabotage, overthrow and truncate his government.

However, in my tiny-pieced opinion,  the Students Union has done a terribly bad job in student's representation, because as it stands NSUK students can not differentiate if there is SUG or not in the varsity!!! It has always been one accusation to another right from its inception thereby totally defeating and contradicting the purpose for its resuscitation.

Sadly!! I will never forget the struggles of Myself, Ofim Kelechi Ofim (Former MACOSA President), Aliyu Tala Safiyanu (Former FOSSSA President), Anas Abdulmuni (Former Pol. Sci. President), Sadiq Abdulrazaq (Former President Faculty of Admin), etc who fought  ceaselessly and relentlessly, bombarding the management to see S.U.G in NSUK.

I still vividly remember how we had to abandon our schedules and lectures in order to brokered meetings with the University management as regards resuscitating S.U.G in NSUK.

Sadly, to our utmost dismay, several months after its reinstatement all seems to be the same without any achievement to show for it.

NSUK ASUU Joins Nationwide Strike; Not on Internal Strike.

NSUK ASUU Joins Nationwide Strike; Not on Internal Strike.

By Simon Markus Yila

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), NSUK Chapter has joined in the ongoing nationwide strike action declared by it's National body.

This was declared after its Congress meeting held on the 6th November 2018. The institution's arm of the Union resolved and instructed all it members to stay at home until the strike is suspended by its national body.

In a related development, there are speculations that NSUK, ASUU chapter yesterday during it Congress meeting also resolved to embark on an internal strike.

To confirm that, NSUK Guide correspondent spoke with a lecturer of the University who is a Congress member, he revealed that the issue of an internal strike was raised but no such decision was made.

'Somebody raised the issue of internal strike, it was agreed that after the national one then we look at internal issues before deciding on what to do.' he said.

The union only resolve to join the Nationwide strike action and as soon as it is called off by the national body, academic activities will resume.

Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, announced the commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike at the end of an emergency meeting on Sunday night, 4th November, 2018.

Briefing newsmen after the closed door meeting, ASUU president, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi listed the reasons for their action to include:

1. Failure on the side of the government to honour the memorandum of action signed between the union and the federal government in 2017

2. Renegotiation with ASUU which the government intentionally ignored with impunity. Professor Ogunyemi therefore directed all the state chapters to ensure full compliance until their demands are met.

Keep following NSUK Guide as we will keep you updated on any new development.

No Increment in NSUK Tuition fee - New IT Director

No increment in NSUK Tuition fee - New IT Director
By Comr. Adeleke M. Opeyemi |5|11|2018

The Executives of The Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences paid a Congratulatory visit to the New Director of the I. T Center, Nasarawa State University, Keffi Dr. Muhammed Yahaya Idris.

During the visit, the president of the Faculty Comr. Adeleke M. Opeyemi congratulated the director, read and presented a letter of Felicitation to the him on his new Appointment in the University as the Director of the I. T Center.

According to him "Dr Yahaya is someone with impeccable character and the Faculty enjoyed his leadership quality during his services as a lecturer and also as faculty exam officer and asserts that this his new position will be of great benefit to not just the Faculty as a whole but also to the university at large" . He said.

The new Director, warmly received the felicitations as he appreciated the effort of the Executives for the kind gesture and admonished the students never to lobby for any position and to do their best, because people are watching them.

He solicited for prayers from all students and urged not hesitate to come and lay any complaints they might encounter with NSUK portal.

The president therefore took the chance to table the numerous complains of students regarding Increase in there school fee, results issues and other related challenges.

The new I. T director assured that the center is fully aware of the situation and are currently working tirelessly and relentlessly to ensure that all issues regarding results and other issues are being tackled and fixed accordingly. Furthermore, he said students should write to IT center officially through their departmental exam officer that the issue will be rectify immediately.

On the issue of increment in school fees, the Director admitted that there were issues with the portal that led to generation of wrong fees but it has been rectified.

However, he pointed that "the misconception of student was that the higher you go, the less you pay. Which is very wrong and as such the amount you paid in 300L is the same amount you will pay in 400L and 500L respectively with little increase or decrease which is normal. The only differences is that of 100L and 200L i.e in 100L you pay higher while in 200L you pay less". He explained.

To be more clearer the Director showed the executives the school fees schedule sent to them from the Bursary unit and that of 400L Non-indigene for the Faculty of Applied Sciences was N45,315 with Internet charges while that of indigene was N37,015.

He conluded by thanking the executives once again for the felicitation and also for seeking clarifications.

ASUU Begins Nation wide Strike as organised labour shun meeting FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has ordered its members across the country to commence an indefinite industrial action.

This followed a meeting of leaders of the union on Sunday at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The National President of ASUU, Professor Abiodun Ogunyemi, told reporters that the union took the decision due to the poor funding of universities in the country.

He consequently directed all members of the union across various universities to withdraw their services, stressing that the strike would be total and indefinite.

Also in a related development, the organised labour Sunday night shunned meeting organised by the Federal Government to resolve the impasse on the new minimum wage.  Non of the labour leaders attended the meeting at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

One of the key officers of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, revealed that the meeting was irrelevant as the only meeting they would attend was the one scheduled today for the signing of the report of the Tripartite Committee.

While briefing the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Suleiman Bala Mohammed on Saturday by the Economics and Theatre and Cultural Studies NUC Accreditation Panels, echoed similar notes made by previous teams.

According to them, "considering that you are a state-owned university, we are highly impressed.

"The philosophy and academic regulations of the programme are in line with the requirements of NUC", said the Department of Economics team. A similar view held by those for Theatre and Cultural Studies.

They added that the university environment is well organized, neat and attractive, hence conducive for learning and research.

However, the teams made some minor observations bordering on provision of more facilities and funding, for which the Acting Vice Chancellor promised to attend to as soon as possible, especially that lectures for the new semester will begin this Monday.

The results of accreditation exercises are expected in a few months time.

2018/19 ADMISSION ON JAMB CAPS: A NEW DIMENSION

|By: @Alieyou_Abokie|
{20/Oct/2018}

- 2018/19 ADMISSIONS TO BE GIVEN BY JAMB NOT SCHOOLS.

- DIRECT ENTRY APPLICANTS TO BE CONSIDERED BY JAMB THIS YEAR.

- SECOND CHOICE APPLICANTS SHOULD START CHECKING THEIR ADMISSION STATUS ON CAPS STARTING FROM MONDAY.

1. 2018/19 ADMISSIONS TO BE GIVEN BY JAMB NOT SCHOOLS.

- It's well known to all Nigerian Students who gained admission through JAMB since the inception of UTME/DE that JAMB do consider applicants after which schools too considered by releasing the school admission list.

2018/19 admission is kind of complicated and a nightmare to its applicants considering the new style that JAMB introduced.
Well, if am not mistaken, with all kind of observations and consultations, 2018 admission would be restricted to CAPS alone; schools are not going to release admission lists rather, they would consider who was given admission by JAMB.

For example, Federal University Lafia, ABU Zaria, FedpolyNas and the likes of FUTMinna and others instructed their candidates to check their admission Status on CAPS and if admitted, should accept/reject the offer and a stipulated date for registration/screening was announced by the schools' management.

This is to tell you that lots of schools are not going to release admission list this year nationwide rather, JAMB.

It is at this juncture, that I am advising all Nigerian Applicants who were not admitted yet to kindly be checking their admission status on CAPS as more names would be uploaded and if admitted, kindly know that you are to just wait for school directives for registration and necessary procedures.

Note: JAMB is trying to eliminate any kind of human interference in school admissions.

2. DIRECT ENTRY APPLICANTS TO BE CONSIDERED BY JAMB THIS YEAR.

- It is of the immense effort of JAMB to offer all its candidates both UTME/DE admission that they introduced Direct Entry admission on CAPS even though it’s schools that use to consider D.E applicants for admission before.

That's when D.E admission on CAPS came to existence. JAMB for the first time in history have started giving admission to D.E Applicants just because they are trying to restrict admissions to be given only by JAMB not schools.

D.E Applicants are hereby instructed to be checking their admission status on CAPS as more names would be uploaded on CAPS soon.

3. SECOND CHOICE APPLICANTS SHOULD START CHECKING THEIR ADMISSION STATUS ON CAPS STARTING FROM MONDAY.

- Another new development is that those who applied University, Polytechnic, Monotechnic and College of Education as their 2nd choice will now be considered by JAMB too. JAMB as of the previous years doesn’t use to consider applicants with second choice rather, 1st choice only.

It’s nice and amazing to hear that JAMB set to upload the names of those who applied the aforementioned institutions as their 2nd choice which is never done before.

Those who fall under this category should with immediate effect start checking their admission status on CAPS starting from Monday.
