Book Publication: Invisible Borders by Zaynab Alkali

Professor Zaynab Alkali; the  former Dean, Faculty of Arts, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, professor of African literature and creative writing and first female author from the North has written another of her beguiling novels, titled: "Invisible borders''.

This is the story of first loves who were destined to be married. Safia and Sam reunite after being separated for a number of years. However, will their love surmount daunting obstacles measured against them? Narrated in Safia’s thoughts, this novel questions the futility of life in death.

It depicts true friendship, love, sacrifice and betrayal. Her published titles include Stillborn, The virtuous woman, Cobwebs and other stories, The Descendants and The Initiates. Professor Alkali’s continuous plying of her trade is a fitting tribute to Buchi Emecheta’s literary prowess.

Alkali was born in Tura-Wazila in Borno State in 1950. She graduated from Bayero University Kano with a BA in 1973. She obtained a doctorate in African Studies in the same university and became the principal of Sakera Girls' boarding school. She went on to be a lecturer in English at two universities in Nigeria.

She rose to be a dean in the Faculty of arts at Nasarawa State University in Keffi where she taught creative writing.

FUT Minna: Over 1,000 forfeit student status

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, Prof. Maubau Akanji, has said that over 1,000 students of the institution have forfeited their student status.

In a chat with Saturday PUNCH, the Vice Chancellor said that the students’ recent protest, which led to the destruction of the university’s clinic, and their refusal to pay N4,950 restitution fee, came as a surprise to the school’s management.

According to him, out of 16,000 students, 14,000 had paid while some were officially out of campus during the period.

He said, “Students who do not pay will not be allowed to continue the semester. It means that they have voluntarily withdrawn their student status.

“The restitution fee was implemented because students were the ones who destroyed the properties and they should be the ones to pay for them.”

Akanji said that properties worth over N59 million were damaged while drugs valued at N3.5 million were burnt during the incident.

Word Zone: SMILE

Line Credit: Mhiz Unique
_________________________
Scriptwriter:  Onchono Franco Emmanuel
_________________________
Title: SMILE
_________________________
Excerpt:  If 5 seconds of smile can make a photograph more beautiful then just imagine, if you keep smiling always. Calculate how beautiful your life will be.
--------------------------------
Tom Wilson once said "a smile is happiness you'll find right under your nose." Do you know that your ability to smile often reflect your ability to control situations? A smile will never cost you a thing compared to what putting on a hard face would. Smiling doesn't just help you the carrier but also those you come in contact with.
You never can tell whose days have been made bright by your smile neither can you tell whose days is gonna be made bright by your smile. Live the life with smile as your reflective jacket so it would reflect happiness within and around you. How I wish our eyes can see beyond what we see or are seeing. No wonder, Mother Teresa once said "We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do." There are new situations our smiles attend to everyday and so we can never tell of all the good our smiles does. Now that you know your smile does so much, why would you wanna stop smiling? Smile on...
Remember, nothin' you wear is more important than your smile. Your smile will give you a positive countenance that will make people feel comfortable around you. A warn smile is the universal language of kindness (Arthur).
A smile is like a sim card and life is like a cellphone. Whenever you insert the sim card of a smile, a beautiful day is activated.
"Begin every day with a smile and end everyday with a smile."

Word Zone: The Mouth

For some time now I’ve been offline like a golf ball shot into a thick forest. In that forest I found rest and made to rest an idea that has rested and needs to be put forth.
Tryna write something about life using the mouth as a point delivery tool/machinery for social transformation. I’ve come to a conclusion that life is just like the mouth and that’s why we can choose either to make it better or bitter.
Now, let’s look at these logic:
---   The mouth is the only opening capable of acceptable and rejecting foods. Through the mouth in collaboration with the organs therein, the sense of taste is guaranteed and so through the mouth, we may decide to take in bitter, sour or sweet things depending on us.

---    The mouth is capable of producing hot air and also cool air. When the mouth is fowl-beak like shaped with the intention of producing hot air, it will surely produce hot air and when it’s made flat in a duck-beak like shape with the intention of producing cool air, surely it will produce cool air.
LOGIC 1:
Your life is like a mouth and capable of rejecting/accepting negativity/positivity depending on you. Your attitude, aptitude and rectitude towards life are what guarantees the taste of your life; these are what decides the bitterness, sourness or sweetness of life depending on you.

Pastor Paul Enenche once said; “nothing attracts quality respect like quality character” in my own words, “nothing attracts quality life like quality decisions”. If the mouth in collaboration with its organs are capable of dictating and rejecting or accepting bitter/sweet things when necessary, then we too can determine what affects our lives for our decision as to how our lives should go lies in our hands and unless we learn to control the what goes into us or affects us, we will never see life as it ought to be.
Some people today live their life as if they need a manual to live it right. They fail to control what affects them. They just wanna go with the flow of life even when the destination of the flow maybe unknown, uncertain or unprofitable because they couldn’t take charge or control of what affects them. Every better life had a good plan which will be best. Just like the mouth, we must learn to be choosy/selective as to what we accept. We must learn to know what to install into our lives and what to uninstall from our lives.
LOGIC 2:
Just like the mouth that is capable of producing hot air and also cool air, so also we are capable of making our lives and that of others smooth. Our lives are mirrors to some people which at times we are unaware that some people are looking up to us for a good life. Just like the mouth that is capable of producing hot air and also cool air, so also we are capable of making positive impacts and also negative impacts on ourselves and those around us.

The decision is therefore ours to choose either to produce hot air(bad) or produce cool air(good). Abraham Lincoln once said; “whatever you are, be a good one” it will be sad and unreasonable that lives are destroyed all because of your single life. Whatever you are whoever be you, you must learn to be a good one because life is meaningful if you see it so and it is also useless if you see it so.
The life you have is God’s gift to you; what you do with it is your gift back to God.  Just like the mouth that is capable of producing hot air and also cool air, we must also learn to take charge of our lives so as to produce good results which will be helpful to us, our families, communities, societies, nation, state and the world at large. Some people’s lives are like arsenal of weapons because they fail to understand that while they live, they help others live. We all have a negative side, but for the sake of humanity and its betterment, we must learn to live right for it is in living right that we live happily so live and lets live.
Remember: life is but a sojourn

Word Zone: Don't Quit

If you can start it then you can end it. No retreat no surrender. Stay put and strong for the end, its gonna be worthwhile. Remember, without sweat and toils no work is made perfect.

The ultimate prize may be a handshake away so why thinking of quitting? Don't forget why and how you started and see them as reasons over why you should give up the struggle. Only the strong can attempt and make it function and so I, Emmanuel aka Linx tell you today that nothin' should cut short your desire and zeal. Let the fire continue to burn till all the needful is ready and handy.

Word Zone: REVENGE

Have you heard or come across words like: retribution, reprisal, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, do me I do you and so many other words and quotes?

Do you know these at times are out backbone in the practice of vengeance which often leads to hate and intra-personal injury?
I've heard people discuss revenge and how they feel. Some feel good when they revenge and that's where and when you hear things like: sweet revenge, great repay, wonderful drilling. But, the truth remains that, there's no joy in revenge. Revenge is affiliated to weak people... Only weak people wanna take an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

Without me there's no you, without
you there's no me and without us there's no us. As far as we live within the circle that we all need each other to lean on; we must always offend each other every now and then.

What is the place of revenge in our existence? The gravity of revenge is mostly higher than that of the offense and this many at times becomes the last memory of some people. What if we maintain a goof picture and become the last memory of some people in a good way by forgiving and letting the hurt and pains go?

Check this out. I don't know what you know or what you think. Imagine for every offense there's a revenge? We all by now, would be victims of vengeance oriented circumstances. Revenge doesn't take back the hand of the clock neither does it restore damages to normality. Why then do we craze, crave and clamour for revenge and even put on revenge jackets to embark on revenge missions?

"There's more to life than filing for revenge"

Be Yourself. By ONCHONO EMMANUEL

Line credit: Doris Matthews
----
Scriptwriter: Onchono Franco Emmanuel
------
Title: Do what you love and love what you do.
________
Excerpt: Never stop doing your best just because someone doesn't give you credit.
*
----- I came across the above excerpt on Abubakar Sadiq's wall in a post he was tagged. The message is so brief, simple, concise, self explanatory and real. The post is meant to address everyone most especially those who tend to give up in what they are good at just because someone or some persons do not bother to give them credit or applause. I once felt that way and almost bashed away my skill but thank God for James Ochayi's interception else you for no even see this small piece of write-up to read sef because by now, my skill for don go into extinction.
----- What is it that you're doing and good at? I understand how killing it is when nobody seems to look at your direction to at least tell you "well done work" but again, you must learn that humans are somewhat somehow; even if what you're doing is helpful to them, their pride would never allow them to admit and give you credit for a job well done. Again you must do what you love and love what you do for it is in that, that you understand that what is worth doing is what doing well. People most at times, wouldn't want to give you credits maybe because of the following reasons:

  • Maybe because they feel they should be the ones doing what you're doing.
  • Maybe they see their credit allocation as a threat to their personality.
  • Maybe they want and desire to be like you only to find out they can but will only be the number 2 of you.
  • Maybe they just want to demoralize and probably sway you from your creative visions.
  • Maybe they are killjoys and naysayers who don't just want to see anything logical or rational; in fact they are pessimists.

*
---- You must understand the simple fact that not all humans are human beings and so don't be that expectant of their credits. After all, whether or not they throw you credits, it neither makes nor mar you. Learn to work independent of people's theories/theorems; this way, you will attain the height you crave for.
#NOTE: whatsoever good you're doing out there at your very best, remember, someone somewhere somehow some way is been touched, helped and given happiness which you may never know. And you may become the memories of such people; as such, may I enjoin you to please do not give up on your skill and never stop doing your best just because someone or some set of people doesn't give you credit.
